1. Central nervous system
Medical · Anatomy Abbreviations
The brain and spinal cord, which integrate sensory information and control movement, thought and the body's automatic functions. CNS disorders include stroke, multiple sclerosis, meningitis, brain tumors and spinal cord injury, and drugs are often described by whether they reach it.
Example: Fever, headache and neck stiffness: CNS infection suspected, LP after CT.
The CNS is protected by the skull, vertebral column, meninges, cerebrospinal fluid and the blood-brain barrier. Its neurons regenerate poorly compared with peripheral nerves. Pharmacology speaks of "CNS depressants" (alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines) and "CNS stimulants" (caffeine, amphetamines). The retinas and optic nerves are developmentally part of the CNS.
2. Clinical nurse specialist
Medical · Healthcare Credential Abbreviations
Advanced practice registered nurse with graduate preparation in a specialty, such as adult-gerontology, pediatrics or neonatal care, who improves outcomes through expert direct care, staff education and system-level change.
Example: Wound CNS leads pressure injury prevention rounds and teaches staff.
One of the four APRN roles. Certifications include ACCNS-AG, ACCNS-P and ACCNS-N from AACN and AGCNS-BC from ANCC. Prescriptive authority for CNSs varies by state. In neurology CNS means central nervous system.
