1. Commandant of the Marine Corps

Military · US Marine Corps Rank Abbreviations

Highest-ranking officer of the US Marine Corps, a four-star general responsible to the secretary of the Navy for organizing, training and equipping the Corps, and a full member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff since 1978.

Example: The CMC's planning guidance calls for lighter, more mobile units in the Pacific.

Samuel Nicholas, commissioned in 1775, is regarded as the first Commandant. The Commandant's official residence at Marine Barracks Washington, "8th and I," is the oldest continuously occupied public building in the capital. In Navy usage CMC also means command master chief, written CMDCM in formal style.

2. Carpometacarpal (joint)

Medical · Anatomy Abbreviations

Joints between the wrist (carpal) bones and the bases of the metacarpals. The thumb CMC joint, a saddle joint that allows opposition, is one of the most common sites of hand osteoarthritis, causing pain at the base of the thumb when pinching or opening jars.

Example: Thumb CMC arthritis with a positive grind test; splint and steroid injection offered.

Basal thumb arthritis is especially common in postmenopausal women. Treatment ranges from splints and injections to surgery such as trapeziectomy with ligament reconstruction. A Bennett fracture is an intra-articular fracture at the base of the thumb metacarpal that involves this joint.

3. Case management conference

Law & Legal · Litigation Abbreviations

Meeting between the judge and counsel, usually early in a civil case, to set deadlines for amending pleadings, discovery, motions, ADR and trial and to address issues that could delay the case. Many courts require a joint written statement beforehand.

Example: Counsel must file a joint CMC statement seven days before the conference.

Federal Rule 16 authorizes scheduling and pretrial conferences, preceded by the parties' Rule 26(f) meet-and-confer. California state courts use Judicial Council form CM-110 for CMC statements. Later status conferences may revisit the schedule, and complex cases may receive a special master for discovery.
