Card. stands for Cardinal, a religious title abbreviation.

Abbreviation for cardinal, a senior Catholic cleric appointed by the pope as a member of the College of Cardinals, whose members under age 80 elect a new pope in a conclave. Cardinals are styled "His Eminence".

Example: The 1990 instruction was signed by Card. Joseph Ratzinger, then prefect of the doctrinal congregation.

Usage notes

Traditionally the title was placed between the given name and surname, as in "John Cardinal Newman", but placing it first is now standard. Cardinals wear scarlet to signify willingness to shed their blood for the faith. In May 2025 the conclave elected Cardinal Robert Prevost, who became Pope Leo XIV.
