CategoriesEducation & Academia

CBEST stands for California Basic Educational Skills Test, a standardized test abbreviation.

Test of reading, mathematics and writing that California uses to verify basic skills for teachers, substitutes and some other credential holders. Each section is scored from 20 to 80, and passing requires a combined 123 with no section below 37.

Example: Substitute teachers in the district must pass the CBEST or show equivalent coursework.

Usage notes

Since 2021 California has allowed candidates to meet the basic skills requirement through qualifying college coursework, so fewer people take the CBEST. Pearson administers it for the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Subject knowledge is tested separately by the CSET.
