BHS stands for Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia, a religious term abbreviation.
Standard critical edition of the Hebrew Bible used by scholars and translators, published between 1967 and 1977 by the German Bible Society. It reproduces the Leningrad Codex with notes on textual variants.
Example: Hebrew exegesis students must bring their BHS to every class.
Usage notes
Its successor, Biblia Hebraica Quinta (BHQ), is being published in volumes. The textual apparatus uses Latin abbreviations, which students learn to decode. A digital version is included in most Bible software packages.
