ARVC stands for Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, a cardiology abbreviation.

Inherited disease, usually from desmosome gene variants, in which right ventricular muscle is replaced by fat and scar, causing ventricular arrhythmias and sudden death, especially in young athletes. Diagnosis uses the revised 2010 Task Force criteria combining ECG, imaging, genetics and family history.

Example: ECG with epsilon waves and inverted T waves in V1 to V3; cardiac MRI to evaluate for ARVC.

Usage notes

The broader term arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) recognizes that the left ventricle can also be involved. Endurance exercise accelerates progression, so affected people are advised to avoid competitive and high-intensity sports. Much of the early research came from Padua in the Veneto region of Italy. The older name is arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD).
