CategoriesUnits & Measurements

AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, an engineering unit abbreviation also used in science.

The percentage of a furnace's or boiler's fuel energy that becomes useful heat over a typical year. A 95 percent AFUE condensing furnace loses only 5 percent of its fuel up the vent, while old furnaces often ran at 56 to 70 percent.

Example: Install a 96% AFUE two-stage gas furnace with a variable-speed blower.

Usage notes

Defined by the US Department of Energy, AFUE excludes heat lost through ductwork and the electricity used by blowers. Condensing furnaces exceed 90 percent by recovering heat from water vapor in the exhaust, which requires plastic venting and a condensate drain. The long-standing federal minimum for most gas furnaces is 80 percent.
