1. Allergic contact dermatitis

Medical · Dermatology Abbreviations

Delayed (type IV) allergic skin reaction that develops one to several days after contact with a substance to which a person has become sensitized, such as nickel, fragrances, preservatives, hair dye or poison ivy. Patch testing identifies the culprit.

Example: ACD to methylisothiazolinone confirmed on patch testing; switch to preservative-free products.

Nickel is the most common positive allergen in patch testing. Poison ivy, oak and sumac cause ACD through urushiol, an oil in the plants. Patch tests are applied for 48 hours and read again at about 72–96 hours. The American Contact Dermatitis Society names an "Allergen of the Year" to raise awareness.

2. Adjournment in contemplation of dismissal

Law & Legal · Criminal Law Abbreviations

New York disposition in which a criminal case is adjourned and then dismissed and sealed if the defendant stays out of trouble and meets any conditions for a set period, usually six months. It involves no guilty plea and results in no conviction.

Example: The prosecutor offered an ACD, so the charge will be dismissed and sealed in six months.

Authorized by Criminal Procedure Law § 170.55 for many misdemeanors and violations, and also written ACOD. Family offense cases carry a one-year period. Until dismissal, the prosecutor can ask to restore the case to the calendar if the defendant violates the conditions.
