2 Macc. stands for 2 Maccabees, a Bible book abbreviation.
Deuterocanonical book of 15 chapters covering many of the same events as 1 Maccabees with a more theological emphasis, including the martyrdom of a mother and her seven sons (chapter 7) and prayers offered for the dead (12:43–46).
Example: Catholic teaching on prayers for the dead cites 2 Macc. 12:46.
Usage notes
Catholic Bibles abbreviate it 2 Mc, and SBL uses 2 Macc. It presents itself as a summary of a five-volume history by Jason of Cyrene. Its teaching on resurrection is among the clearest in the Old Testament period.
