1099 stands for IRS Form 1099 information return series, a tax abbreviation.
Family of IRS information returns reporting payments other than wages, such as contractor fees, interest, dividends, brokerage sales, retirement distributions and payment app receipts. Payers send copies to the recipient and the IRS, which matches the amounts against individual returns.
Example: Freelancing on the side means I'll get a 1099 from every client who paid me more than the threshold.
Usage notes
Pronounced "ten-ninety-nine." "1099 worker" or "1099 contractor" is shorthand for an independent contractor who receives no withholding and must pay estimated tax and self-employment tax. Income is taxable even if no form arrives. Most 1099s must reach recipients by January 31, though brokerages often send a consolidated 1099 by mid-February. Corrections are marked "CORRECTED" rather than issued under a new number.
