1098-E stands for Student Loan Interest Statement (IRS Form 1098-E), a tax abbreviation.
Loan servicers issue this statement when a borrower pays $600 or more in student loan interest during the year. The interest supports an above-the-line deduction of up to $2,500 that phases out at higher incomes.
Example: I got a 1098-E from my servicer showing $1,840 of interest paid.
Usage notes
The deduction is available whether or not the borrower itemizes, but not to anyone married filing separately or who can be claimed as someone else's dependent. Interest below $600 remains deductible even though no form is required.
