CategoriesBusiness & Finance

1099-K stands for Payment Card and Third Party Network Transactions (IRS Form 1099-K), a tax abbreviation.

Card processors, payment apps and online marketplaces such as PayPal, Venmo, Etsy and eBay use this form to report the gross amount a user received for goods and services. Card payments are reportable at any amount, while app and marketplace payments are subject to a threshold.

Example: Etsy sent me a 1099-K showing my gross sales before fees and refunds.

Usage notes

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 cut the payment-app threshold from $20,000 and 200 transactions to $600, but the IRS repeatedly delayed it, and legislation in 2025 restored the original threshold. Gross amounts include fees, shipping and refunds, so sellers reconcile the figure on their return. Personal transfers, such as splitting a bill with friends, are not reportable.
