1099-DA stands for Digital Asset Proceeds From Broker Transactions (IRS Form 1099-DA), a tax abbreviation.
Cryptocurrency exchanges and other digital asset brokers use this return to report customers' sales and exchanges of crypto, stablecoins and similar assets. Gross proceeds reporting began with 2025 transactions, with cost basis reporting phasing in afterward.
Example: Coinbase issued my first 1099-DA, but it doesn't show the basis for coins I bought years ago.
Usage notes
The requirement stems from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021, which extended broker reporting to digital assets. Form 1040 has asked a digital asset question since 2019 regardless of whether any form is received. Rules that would have covered decentralized finance platforms were repealed by Congress in 2025.
