CategoriesBusiness & Finance

1040-X stands for Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return (IRS Form 1040-X), a tax abbreviation.

Used to correct a Form 1040 already filed, for example to add a missed W-2, claim an overlooked credit or change filing status. A refund claim generally must be made within three years of the original filing or two years after the tax was paid, whichever is later.

Example: I realized I forgot the 1098-T, so I'm filing a 1040-X to claim the education credit.

Usage notes

Electronic filing of amended returns became possible in 2020; paper versions take much longer, often 16 weeks or more. Simple math errors do not require an amended return because the IRS corrects them automatically. Status can be followed with the "Where's My Amended Return?" tool. Also written 1040X.
