Main federal income tax return for US citizens and residents, reporting income, adjustments, deductions, credits and payments to determine whether tax is owed or refunded. Returns for a calendar year are due April 15 of the following year, or the next business day.

Usage notes
The first Form 1040 appeared in 1913, after the Sixteenth Amendment authorized a federal income tax; it was four pages including instructions. Forms 1040A and 1040EZ were retired after the 2017 tax year, and since 2019 extra items flow through numbered Schedules 1, 2 and 3 alongside lettered ones such as Schedule C for businesses. Pronounced "ten-forty."
