1 Thess. stands for 1 Thessalonians, a Bible book abbreviation.
Probably the oldest surviving Christian writing, five chapters written by Paul around AD 50 to the young church at Thessalonica. It addresses the return of Christ, including the passage about believers being "caught up" to meet the Lord in the air (4:17).
Example: The idea of the rapture draws heavily on 1 Thess. 4:13–18.
Usage notes
Catholic Bibles and Chicago's short forms use 1 Thes, while SBL writes 1 Thess. The letter was written within about twenty years of Jesus' death. Its instruction to "pray without ceasing" (5:17) is widely quoted.
