ChIP-seq stands for Chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing, a genetics abbreviation.
Method for mapping where a protein, such as a transcription factor or a modified histone, binds across the genome. Cells are fixed, DNA is fragmented, antibodies pull down the protein with its attached DNA, and the recovered DNA is sequenced.
Example: ChIP-seq revealed that the transcription factor binds more than 8,000 sites, mostly near promoters.
Usage notes
Several groups published the method in 2007. It became a core technique of the ENCODE project, which catalogs functional elements of the human genome. Newer alternatives such as CUT&RUN need fewer cells and give cleaner signals.
