y/o stands for Years old, a medical documentation abbreviation.
Age notation used in the opening line of notes and presentations, as in "67 y/o male". It immediately frames the patient for the reader.
Example: 34 y/o G2P1 at 32 weeks presenting with headache and BP 162/104.
Usage notes
Also written yo, y.o. or YO; months and weeks use "m/o" and "wk/o" in pediatrics. The opening "one-liner" usually combines age, sex, key history and the main complaint. Some teaching programs discourage starting presentations with race unless clinically relevant.
