1. X-ray diffraction
Science & Engineering · Chemistry Abbreviations
Technique that directs X-rays at a crystalline material and records the angles at which they are diffracted, revealing the arrangement of atoms. Powder XRD identifies minerals, pharmaceutical crystal forms and corrosion products, while single-crystal XRD determines complete molecular structures.
Example: Powder XRD confirmed that the white pigment was rutile rather than anatase.
Max von Laue showed in 1912 that crystals diffract X-rays, and William Henry and William Lawrence Bragg used the effect to solve crystal structures, sharing the 1915 Nobel Prize in Physics. Rosalind Franklin's diffraction images of DNA, notably Photo 51, were crucial evidence for the 1953 double-helix model.
2. Crossroad (Xrd)
Geography & Places · Address Abbreviations
Junction of two routes, standardized by USPS as XRD, with Crossroads as XRDS. It often marks old rural intersections that grew into small communities.
Example: The general store at 12 Old Xrd has stood since the 1880s.
Like Xing, it uses X to represent cross. Rural place names such as Five Points or Crossroads began as road junctions where a store or church stood.
