XFL stands for XFL (no official expansion), a sports league and organization abbreviation.
Name of two short-lived US spring football leagues: a 2001 version owned by WWE and NBC, and a revival that played in 2020 and 2023. In 2024 the revived XFL merged with the USFL to form the United Football League.
Example: The 2001 XFL let players wear nicknames on their jerseys, most famously "He Hate Me."
Usage notes
Created by Vince McMahon, who marketed the "X" as extreme but gave it no official meaning. The 2020 season was cut short by COVID-19, and the league was bought out of bankruptcy by Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and RedBird Capital. The original version lasted a single season.
