CFL stands for Canadian Football League, a sports league and organization abbreviation.

Professional Canadian football league with nine teams, playing a summer and fall season that ends with the Grey Cup in November. Canadian rules differ from American football: three downs, 12 players a side, a 110-yard field and a single point, the rouge, for some missed kicks.

Example: He spent four seasons in the CFL before earning a tryout with an NFL team.

Usage notes

Formed in 1958, although the Grey Cup trophy has been awarded since 1909. The league briefly expanded into the United States from 1993 to 1995, and the Baltimore Stallions won the 1995 Grey Cup. Rosters must include a quota of Canadian ("national") players. Pronounced as letters.
