WWTP stands for Wastewater treatment plant, an environmental abbreviation.

Facility that cleans sewage and industrial wastewater before releasing it to rivers or the sea. Treatment usually includes primary settling, secondary biological treatment in which microbes consume organic matter, and sometimes tertiary steps that remove nutrients or disinfect.

Example: The WWTP upgrade will remove nitrogen to protect the estuary from algal blooms.

Usage notes

The activated sludge process, developed in Manchester, England, in 1914 by Edward Ardern and William Lockett, remains the most widely used secondary treatment. Many utilities now call their plants water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs), reflecting the recovery of energy, nutrients and reusable water. Wastewater monitoring became a public health tool during COVID-19.
