CategoriesScience & Engineering

CCUS stands for Carbon capture, utilization and storage, an environmental abbreviation.

Broader term covering carbon capture and storage plus the use of captured CO2 in products such as fertilizer, synthetic fuels, plastics, concrete and carbonated drinks. Utilization can offset some capture costs, though most uses release the carbon again eventually.

Example: The US 45Q tax credit pays up to 85 dollars per tonne of CO2 stored in CCUS projects.

Usage notes

Concrete curing and mineralization can lock CO2 away for long periods, while fuels and beverages release it again within months. Using captured CO2 for enhanced oil recovery is the largest current utilization and is the most controversial in climate terms. The term is favored by industry and the International Energy Agency.
