1. Commander

Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rank Abbreviations

Navy and Coast Guard officer rank at pay grade O-5, shown by a silver oak leaf or three gold sleeve stripes. Commanders typically command destroyers, submarines, aviation squadrons and medium Coast Guard cutters, or serve as senior staff officers.

Example: CDR Ellis assumed command of the destroyer in a ceremony on the pier at Naval Station Norfolk.

A commanding officer is called "Captain" aboard ship regardless of actual rank. Equal in grade to an Army or Air Force lieutenant colonel. In Army and joint documents "CDR" also abbreviates the role of commander of any unit, as in "CDR, 2nd Brigade," which can cause confusion. AP style writes Cmdr.

2. Carbon dioxide removal

Science & Engineering · Environmental Abbreviations

Human activities that take CO2 out of the atmosphere and store it durably, including planting forests, restoring wetlands, adding biochar to soil, enhanced rock weathering, direct air capture and BECCS. CDR is distinct from cutting emissions, which only slows additions.

Example: The airline signed a CDR purchase agreement for 100,000 tonnes of removals over ten years.

The IPCC finds that all pathways limiting warming to 1.5 °C include some CDR to offset residual emissions. Today nearly all CDR comes from conventional forestry; novel methods remove only a tiny fraction. Durability matters: carbon in trees can return to the air through fire, while mineral storage lasts millennia.
