WI stands for Wisconsin, a US state abbreviation.
The Badger State became the 30th state on May 29, 1848. Madison is the capital and Milwaukee the largest city, and Wisconsin calls itself America's Dairyland, producing more cheese than any other state.
Example: Cheese curds from Green Bay, WI arrived packed in dry ice.
Usage notes
AP style uses Wis.; the informal Wisc. is common but not standard in AP, GPO or Bluebook style. WI was introduced in 1963 and is sometimes confused with WA (Washington) or WY (Wyoming). The Badger nickname refers to 1820s lead miners who dug shelters into hillsides.
