VMT stands for Vehicle miles traveled, a driving abbreviation.
Total miles driven by all vehicles in an area over a period, a key measure in transportation planning, highway funding and emissions estimates. Americans drive roughly 3.2 trillion miles a year.
Example: The state hopes transit expansion will cut VMT and congestion in the metro area.
Usage notes
VMT dropped sharply in 2020 during COVID-19 lockdowns and then recovered. Some states are testing VMT-based road usage charges to replace fuel taxes as electric vehicles spread. Oregon launched one of the first voluntary programs, OReGO, in 2015.
