VDU stands for Visual display unit, a computer hardware abbreviation.
British term for a computer monitor or terminal screen, common from the 1970s to the 1990s and still found in workplace health and safety contexts.
Example: Staff who use a VDU for long periods are entitled to regular eye tests.
Usage notes
UK workplace rules dating from 1992, now framed as display screen equipment (DSE) regulations, require employers to assess workstations and pay for eye tests for regular users; similar EU rules exist. The term covered both the screen and terminals connected to mainframes. In American English, "monitor" or "display" is used instead.
