VBS stands for Vacation Bible School, a religious term abbreviation.
Summer program run by churches, usually for a week, in which children take part in Bible stories, songs, crafts, games and snacks organized around a yearly theme. Many families use it as low-cost summer child care.
Example: VBS runs from 9 a.m. to noon all week, with a closing program on Friday night.
Usage notes
The idea dates to the late 1890s, when church women in New York started summer Bible schools for children. Christian publishers such as Lifeway and Group sell themed VBS kits each year. Attendance often includes many children from outside the congregation.
