VASI stands for Visual approach slope indicator, an aviation abbreviation.
Older visual glide-path system using bars of lights near the runway threshold: when the aircraft is on the correct path, the near bar shows white and the far bar shows red. VASIs are being replaced by PAPIs at most airports.
Example: Fly the VASI down, red over white, and touch down just past the numbers.
Usage notes
Pilots learn it with the rhyme "red over white, you're all right; white over white, you're high as a kite; red over red, you're dead." Three-bar versions at some airports provide a second, higher glide path for widebody jets, whose cockpits sit far above the main wheels. Pronounced "VAH-zee."
