ABET stands for ABET (formerly Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), an academic abbreviation.
Nonprofit that accredits college programs in engineering, computing, applied and natural science and engineering technology, in the US and in dozens of other countries. Graduating from an ABET-accredited engineering program is the usual path to Professional Engineer licensure.
Example: The job posting requires a degree from an ABET-accredited mechanical engineering program.
Usage notes
Founded in 1932 as the Engineers' Council for Professional Development, it adopted the ABET name in 1980 and now uses only the initials. ABET accredits individual programs, not whole universities. Pronounced "AY-bet".
