UHI stands for Urban heat island, an environmental abbreviation.
Tendency of cities to be warmer than surrounding rural areas, especially at night, because pavement and buildings absorb and re-radiate heat, vegetation is scarce and engines and air conditioners release waste heat. The effect can add several degrees during heat waves.
Example: Tree planting in the city's hottest neighborhoods aims to reduce the UHI effect by shading streets.
Usage notes
English chemist and amateur meteorologist Luke Howard documented London's higher temperatures in the 1810s, in The Climate of London. Cool roofs, reflective pavements, parks and street trees are common countermeasures. The UHI matters for public health because nighttime heat prevents the body from recovering.
