TXA stands for Tranexamic acid, a drug abbreviation.
Antifibrinolytic drug that slows clot breakdown, used to reduce bleeding in trauma, postpartum hemorrhage, surgery, heavy menstrual bleeding and dental procedures in people with bleeding disorders.
Example: TXA 1 g IV over 10 minutes within 3 hours of injury, then 1 g over 8 hours.
Usage notes
The CRASH-2 trial (2010) showed reduced death from bleeding in trauma patients when TXA was given within three hours, and the WOMAN trial (2017) showed benefit in postpartum hemorrhage. The FDA has warned about wrong-route errors in which TXA vials were mistaken for spinal anesthetics and injected intrathecally, causing seizures and deaths.
