TMP-SMX stands for Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, a drug abbreviation.
Combination antibiotic, also called co-trimoxazole and sold as Bactrim or Septra, used for urinary tract infections, MRSA skin infections and prevention and treatment of Pneumocystis pneumonia. The two drugs are combined in a fixed 1:5 ratio.
Example: TMP-SMX DS 1 tab BID x 3 days; recheck potassium given ACE inhibitor.
Usage notes
The order of letters varies: SMX-TMP and TMP/SMX are equally common. The sulfonamide component causes most allergic reactions, including rare Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Trimethoprim raises potassium and serum creatinine, which matters in older patients on ACE inhibitors or spironolactone. It also interacts strongly with warfarin.
