1. Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin

Medical · Endocrinology & Diabetes Abbreviations

Autoantibody that binds and activates the TSH receptor on thyroid cells, driving excess hormone production and gland growth in Graves' disease. A positive TSI confirms Graves' as the cause of hyperthyroidism without a radioactive uptake scan.

Example: Hyperthyroid with diffuse goiter, TSI 4.2 times upper limit: Graves' disease confirmed.

TSI is one kind of TSH receptor antibody (TRAb); some assays measure all binding antibodies rather than only stimulating ones. Because the antibodies cross the placenta, high levels in late pregnancy can cause hyperthyroidism in the newborn. Falling levels during treatment suggest a better chance of remission.

2. Texas Success Initiative

Education & Academia · Standardized Test Abbreviations

Texas program that determines whether students entering public colleges and universities are ready for college-level reading, writing and math, using the TSI Assessment 2.0 (TSIA2) unless a student is exempt. Students who miss the benchmarks take developmental or corequisite courses.

Example: Her SAT scores exempted her from the TSI, so she enrolled directly in college algebra.

Exemptions include qualifying SAT or ACT scores, military service and some prior college coursework. The TSIA2, developed with the College Board, launched in 2021 on the Accuplacer platform. Results affect course placement, not admission.
