TSCA stands for Toxic Substances Control Act, a US law abbreviation.
Gives the EPA authority to require testing, reporting and restrictions on chemicals in commerce, and to evaluate and regulate existing chemicals that pose unreasonable risks. Pesticides, food, drugs and cosmetics fall under other laws.
Example: Under TSCA, the EPA banned ongoing uses of chrysotile asbestos in 2024.
Usage notes
Enacted in 1976, it was considered weak because tens of thousands of existing chemicals were grandfathered. The Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act of 2016 overhauled it, requiring risk evaluations of existing chemicals on deadlines. It is pronounced "TOSS-kuh".
