1. Tip, ring, sleeve
Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations
Audio connector with three contacts, used in 3.5 mm headphone plugs and 6.35 mm (quarter-inch) jacks. In headphones it carries left, right and ground; in pro audio it carries balanced mono signals.
Example: Use TRS cables between the audio interface and the studio monitors for a balanced connection.
A plug with two contacts is TS (tip, sleeve), used for guitar and mono instrument cables; connecting a TS cable where TRS is expected can cause noise or silence. The quarter-inch jack descends from 19th-century telephone switchboards, which is why it is also called a phone plug. Each conductor is separated by a small insulating ring visible on the plug.
2. Total return swap
Business & Finance · Bond & Fixed-Income Abbreviations
Derivative in which one party pays the total return on an asset, including income and price changes, and receives a financing rate such as SOFR plus a spread. It lets investors gain economic exposure to assets without owning them.
Example: The fund held its stock positions through TRS contracts with several banks, keeping them off the share register.
Total return swaps are widely used by hedge funds for leverage. The 2021 collapse of Archegos Capital Management, which had built concentrated exposures through such swaps, cost its banks more than $10 billion. Regulators tightened disclosure rules for security-based swaps afterward.
