1. Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities

Business & Finance · Bond & Fixed-Income Abbreviations

US Treasury securities whose principal is adjusted with changes in the consumer price index, so interest payments and the amount repaid at maturity rise with inflation. They protect investors against unexpected inflation.

Example: Retirees added TIPS to their portfolios when inflation jumped in 2022.

First issued in 1997, TIPS come in 5-, 10- and 30-year maturities. The gap between a regular Treasury yield and the TIPS yield of the same maturity, called the breakeven inflation rate, is a market measure of expected inflation. Inflation adjustments are taxable each year even though they are paid only at maturity. Pronounced "tips."

2. Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt

Medical · Gastroenterology Abbreviations

Interventional radiology procedure in which a stent is placed through the liver from a hepatic vein to a portal vein branch, lowering portal pressure. It controls refractory variceal bleeding and refractory ascites, at the cost of a higher risk of hepatic encephalopathy.

Example: Recurrent variceal bleed despite banding; IR consulted for TIPS, MELD 14.

Pronounced "tips". The catheter enters through the internal jugular vein, avoiding open surgery. Modern covered stents have greatly improved shunt patency compared with bare metal stents. Severe heart failure, pulmonary hypertension and advanced liver failure are contraindications. Preemptive TIPS within 72 hours of a high-risk variceal bleed can improve survival.
