1. Trail

Geography & Places · Address Abbreviations

Evokes a path through open country and is common in Western and Sun Belt subdivisions and on roads that follow historic routes, such as the Tamiami Trail between Tampa and Miami.

Example: Take Tamiami Trl south from Sarasota toward Naples.

TRL is the standard form. Trlr, for trailer, is a different designation used for mobile homes. Road names ending in Trail often honor cattle drives, Native American paths or pioneer wagon routes.

2. Technology readiness level (TRL)

Science & Engineering · Engineering Abbreviations

Nine-step scale for gauging the maturity of a technology, from TRL 1, basic principles observed, to TRL 9, a system proven in actual operation. Government agencies and investors use TRLs to judge development risk and decide what to fund.

Example: The battery chemistry is at TRL 4, validated in the laboratory but not yet in a full-size prototype.

NASA researcher Stan Sadin conceived the scale in 1974, and NASA formalized nine levels in the 1990s. The US Department of Defense, the European Union and many energy agencies now use adapted versions. Projects often stall in the "valley of death" around TRL 4-6, between lab success and commercial deployment.
