1. Utah

Geography & Places · US State Abbreviations

Admitted on January 4, 1896, as the 45th state after decades of conflict over polygamy. Salt Lake City is the capital and largest city, and the Beehive State contains five national parks: Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Zion.

Example: Ski packages to Park City, UT include lift tickets and airport shuttles.

Utah has no traditional short form, and AP never abbreviates the four-letter name. UT was set in 1963. UT also refers to the University of Texas or University of Tennessee in sports and to Universal Time in some technical texts. The beehive on the state seal and highway signs symbolizes industry.

2. University of Texas at Austin

Education & Academia · University Abbreviations

Public flagship of the University of Texas System, founded in 1883 in Austin, with more than 50,000 students. Its Longhorns joined the Southeastern Conference in 2024, and the school's endowment, supported by oil revenue from public lands, is among the largest in the country.

Example: Hook 'em: she got into UT's McCombs School of Business.

In Texas, "UT" means Austin, while in Tennessee it means the University of Tennessee. Other UT System campuses use names such as UTEP, UTSA and UT Dallas. The Permanent University Fund, created in 1876, benefits both the UT and Texas A&M systems.

3. University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Education & Academia · University Abbreviations

Flagship of the University of Tennessee System, founded in 1794 as Blount College. Its Volunteers compete in the SEC, and the university co-manages Oak Ridge National Laboratory with Battelle.

Example: The orange-and-white checkerboard end zones at UT's Neyland Stadium are famous.

The campus is often written "UTK" to distinguish it from the University of Texas. Coach Pat Summitt built the Lady Vols basketball program into a dynasty with eight national titles. Neyland Stadium holds more than 100,000 spectators.

4. Ultrasonic testing

Science & Engineering · Engineering Abbreviations

Nondestructive testing method that sends high-frequency sound pulses, typically 1 to 10 megahertz, into a material and analyzes the echoes to find internal flaws or measure thickness. UT inspects welds, forgings, pipes, aircraft structures and storage tanks for corrosion.

Example: UT thickness readings showed the tank floor had corroded to 4 mm in one corner.

Phased-array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) uses many small elements steered electronically to build cross-sectional images, and it is replacing radiography in many weld inspections because it involves no radiation. A gel couplant is used to transmit sound into the part. UT is also the postal abbreviation for Utah.

5. Utilitiesman

Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rating Abbreviations

Seabees who install and maintain plumbing, heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, water purification, sewage and fuel distribution systems at bases, camps and construction sites around the world.

Example: UT2 Grant installed the water purification unit that supplied the camp's showers.

Utilitiesmen are vital during disaster response, where clean water and sanitation come first. Seabee utilitiesmen also install the fuel systems that supply expeditionary airfields. In US postal use UT is the code for Utah, and in time zones UT means Universal Time.

6. Union Territory

Geography & Places · Region Abbreviations

Type of administrative division in India governed directly by the central government rather than by a state, such as Chandigarh, Ladakh and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. India has eight union territories.

Example: Ladakh became a separate UT in 2019, split from Jammu and Kashmir.

Delhi and Puducherry are union territories with their own elected legislatures. UT is also Utah's postal code.
