TACON stands for Tactical control, a military term abbreviation.
Limited command authority, usually local and temporary, to direct and control the movements and maneuvers of forces assigned for a specific mission or task. It is commonly used for attachments of short duration.
Example: The helicopter company was TACON to the infantry battalion for the air assault.
Usage notes
TACON is narrower than operational control (OPCON); the gaining commander can direct where units go but not reorganize them. Support relationships, such as direct support, are a separate category. Pronounced "TAC-con."
