Rocket motor filled with solid propellant, strapped to a launch vehicle to add thrust during the first minutes of flight. The space shuttle's two SRBs supplied most of its liftoff thrust, and NASA's Space Launch System uses larger, five-segment versions.

Example: The twin SRBs separated about two minutes after liftoff and parachuted into the Atlantic.

Once ignited, an SRB cannot be throttled or shut down. The 1986 Challenger disaster was caused by the failure of an O-ring seal in a shuttle SRB joint in cold weather. Shuttle boosters were recovered from the ocean and reused, while SLS boosters are discarded.

2. Selective Reenlistment Bonus

Cash bonus offered to service members who reenlist in specialties with personnel shortages, calculated from monthly basic pay, years of additional service and a multiple set for each skill.

Example: With his SRB he reenlisted for six years as a cryptologic linguist.
