T1 stands for Transmission System 1, a telecom abbreviation.

Digital telephone and data line carrying 1.544 Mbit/s, divided into 24 channels of 64 kbit/s each, used in North America and Japan for business phone systems and dedicated internet access. Europe's equivalent is E1 at 2.048 Mbit/s.

Example: In 1999 the office shared a single T1 line for internet access across 50 employees.

Usage notes

Bell Labs introduced the T-carrier system in 1962 to carry multiple calls over copper between telephone exchanges. T1 lines were prized for reliability and guaranteed bandwidth, though expensive. Ethernet over fiber and business broadband have largely replaced them. The 24 channels are called DS0s.
