RJ11 stands for Registered Jack 11, a telecom abbreviation.
Small modular connector used for landline telephones, fax machines and DSL connections, with a six-position plug usually wired with two or four contacts. It is smaller than the RJ45 plug used for Ethernet.
Example: Plug the DSL filter into the wall socket, then connect the modem with the RJ11 cable.
Usage notes
Registered jack designations come from the US Bell System's registration codes of the 1970s, which the FCC used for connecting customer equipment to the network. An RJ11 plug can physically fit an RJ45 socket but does not work for Ethernet. The UK traditionally used a different BT phone socket, though RJ11 plugs are common on equipment.
