syr stands for Syrup, a pharmacy abbreviation.
Concentrated, viscous sugar-based oral liquid used to deliver and flavor drugs, especially for children and cough remedies. The official Syrup NF is 85 percent sucrose by weight per volume.
Example: Promethazine 6.25 mg/5 mL syr, 5 mL PO q6h PRN nausea.
Usage notes
Sugar-free syrups use sorbitol or other sweeteners, which can cause diarrhea in large amounts. "Simple syrup" is used by pharmacists as a vehicle when compounding liquids. Pediatric dosing errors with syrups often come from confusing teaspoons with milliliters, so labels now favor mL only.
