susp stands for Suspension, a pharmacy abbreviation.

Liquid dosage form in which fine, undissolved drug particles are dispersed in a vehicle, so the bottle must be shaken before each dose to get an even amount. Many pediatric antibiotics are suspensions reconstituted from powder by the pharmacist.

Example: Amoxicillin 400 mg/5 mL susp, give 5 mL PO BID x 10 days; shake well.

Usage notes

Reconstituted antibiotic suspensions typically expire 7 to 14 days after mixing, and some must be refrigerated. Dosing with an oral syringe marked in mL is far more accurate than household spoons. Suspensions differ from solutions, in which the drug is fully dissolved and no shaking is required.
