1. Suspicious or suspect
Texting & Internet Slang · Gen Z Slang Abbreviations
Describes a person or behavior that seems shady, dishonest or questionable, as in "that's kinda sus." Hugely popularized in 2020 by the video game Among Us.
Example: He said he was home all night but his car was gone, sus.
In Among Us, players accuse each other of being the impostor by calling them sus. The clipping is much older: in Britain, the "sus law" was the informal name for police stop-and-search powers under the Vagrancy Act 1824, used until 1981. Mild and widely understood among younger people.
2. Susanna (Sus.)
Religion · Bible Book Abbreviations
Story of the virtuous Susanna, falsely accused of adultery by two elders whose lie the young Daniel exposes by questioning them separately. It appears as chapter 13 of Daniel in Catholic Bibles and among the Additions to Daniel in the Protestant Apocrypha.
Example: Susanna's rescue in Sus. is an early example of cross-examining witnesses separately.
SBL writes Sus. The story was a popular subject for Renaissance and Baroque painters, including Rembrandt and Artemisia Gentileschi. The name Daniel means "God is my judge", fitting his role in the tale.
