UKIP stands for UK Independence Party, a UK government abbreviation.
Right-wing party founded in 1993 to campaign for the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union. Its electoral pressure helped prompt the 2016 Brexit referendum.
Example: UKIP topped the poll in the 2014 European Parliament elections in Britain.
Usage notes
Under Nigel Farage it won the most UK seats in the 2014 European elections, and it took 12.6 percent of the vote at the 2015 general election but only one seat. Support collapsed after the referendum, and Farage went on to lead the Brexit Party, later renamed Reform UK. It is pronounced "YOU-kip".
