CategoriesBusiness & Finance

SMSF stands for Self-managed super fund, a personal finance abbreviation.

Australian private superannuation fund with up to six members, all of whom must act as trustees or as directors of a corporate trustee, giving them direct control over investments. SMSFs are regulated by the Australian Taxation Office.

Example: Our SMSF bought the commercial property our business operates from.

Usage notes

The membership cap rose from four to six in July 2021. Trustees are personally responsible for complying with superannuation law, and every fund needs an annual independent audit, so running costs tend to make an SMSF economical only for larger balances.
