1. Time of death
Medical · Emergency Medicine Abbreviations
Time at which a patient is declared dead, recorded by the physician or authorized clinician after confirming absence of pulse, breathing and heart sounds, or by brain death criteria.
Example: Resuscitation stopped; TOD 0347 pronounced by Dr. Grant.
After a failed resuscitation the time of death is usually the moment the team leader stops efforts. Forensic estimates of time of death rely on body temperature, rigor and lividity and are less precise. Some states allow nurses to pronounce death in hospice and nursing home settings.
2. Transfer on death
Business & Finance · Personal Finance Abbreviations · also used in law
Beneficiary designation on brokerage accounts, vehicles and, in many states, real estate that passes the asset directly to the named people when the owner dies, without probate. The owner keeps full control during life and can change beneficiaries at any time.
Example: Adding a TOD registration to the brokerage account means the kids won't need probate to inherit it.
Securities registrations rely on the Uniform TOD Security Registration Act, adopted in nearly every state, and transfer-on-death deeds for real estate are allowed in roughly 30 states. A TOD designation overrides a will, so beneficiary forms must be kept current. The bank-account equivalent is POD.
3. Transit-oriented development
Transportation & Travel · Rail and Transit Abbreviations
Urban planning approach that concentrates housing, offices and shops within walking distance of transit stations to encourage people to walk, cycle and ride transit instead of driving. TOD typically involves higher density and reduced parking.
Example: The city rezoned land around the new station for TOD, allowing six-story apartment buildings.
Hong Kong's MTR rail-plus-property model and Arlington, Virginia's Rosslyn-Ballston corridor are often cited as successful examples. California and other states have passed laws loosening zoning near transit. Critics worry about gentrification and displacement.
