SSDI stands for Social Security Disability Insurance, a public program abbreviation.

Social Security benefit for workers under full retirement age who cannot work because of a medical condition expected to last at least a year or result in death, and who have earned enough work credits through payroll taxes. Payments are based on past earnings.

Example: After two denials, his SSDI claim was approved by an administrative law judge.

Usage notes

Created in 1956, SSDI has a five-month waiting period before benefits begin, and recipients become eligible for Medicare after 24 months of benefits. Unlike SSI, it does not depend on financial need. Many initial applications are denied, and appeals can take more than a year.
